The Meeting Street Scholarship Fund’s first-ever class of Spartanburg recipients enjoyed a perfect summer evening of baseball and new friends at the Hub City Spartanburgers game on Tuesday night.
Susu and George Dean Johnson, Jr. announced in November 2024 that they would expand the Scholarship to Spartanburg County residents this fall. Nearly 200 Spartanburg students earned the Scholarship and will start college in a few weeks.
The Johnsons hosted Spartanburg recipients for the game, inviting them to connect with one another and Scholarship leaders. Students received complimentary tickets for two guests and concessions.
The Spartanburgers honored Scholarship recipients throughout the game, and new recipient Shamya Wilkins threw out the first pitch. The evening exemplified one of the Scholarship’s core values, building community, which is essential to college success, said John Huber-MacNealy, managing director of the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund.
“This was an opportunity to recognize the hard work of these students and send them off to college feeling celebrated and supported,” he said. “We’re grateful to the Johnsons for their support and continued belief in the life-changing power of this Scholarship.”
