What you need to know to complete Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

November 21, 2024

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open to all students and families for the 2025-26 school year, and we’ve got two resources to help.

We strongly encourage students to complete the following steps as soon as possible.

CREATE AN FSA ID

The FSA ID is a username and password that will be used to complete the FAFSA. It usually takes one to three days for an FSA ID to be confirmed by the Social Security Administration.

Anyone required to provide information on a FAFSA form must create an FSA ID, and for most students, at least one parent must also create an FSA ID to provide information as part of the student’s FAFSA form.

The FSA ID requires a full legal name, date of birth, Social Security Number, personal email address, cell phone number and permanent address. Students and parents without Social Security Numbers will complete a knowledge-based verification process, which will be based largely on credit and financial history.

COMPLETE THE FAFSA FORM

Federal officials use the FAFSA to make determinations on the Federal Pell Grant. They also share this information with colleges and university to help financial aid administrators distribute need-based financial aid.

As a reminder, one of the criteria to qualify for a Meeting Street Scholarship Fund is to successfully complete the FAFSA and receive a Federal Pell Grant of any amount. This must be completed before applying for our Scholarship, which will begin accepting applications Jan. 6, 2025.
